Cleaning Up
A dogâs ability to smell things that humans canât smell creates a problem when it comes to accidents inside the home. Once a dog goes to the bathroom in your home, that smell will remain there for other dogs to smell.
This means you have to be very diligent about handling accidents:
âClean up any messes in the house as soon as you find them.
âIn areas where your dog has an accident, you should thoroughly clean the spot so there is no remaining scent. Your Schnoodle might take any lingering odor as a sign that the spot is an acceptable place to use the bathroom.
Spend a bit of time researching what kinds of cleaner you want to use, whether generic or holistic. For example, you will likely want to get a product with an enzyme cleaner. Enzymes help to remove stains by speeding up the chemical reaction of the cleaner with the stain. They also help to remove the smell faster, which reduces the odds your dog will continue to go to the bathroom in the same place. If Schnoodles are properly trained, they feel no need to mark their territory, but you should also discourage other dogs from claiming areas around your property.
If your Schnoodle has an accident, it is important to refrain from punishing the puppy. Punishment simply teaches your dog to hide his mess or to be stealthier about when he goes inside. Accidents are not a reason to punish â if they happen often, it is really more of a reflection of your training and your schedule than on the puppy. However, even the best trainers can tell you accidents are pretty much an inevitability. When it happens, tell your puppy, âNo! Potty outside!â and clean up the mess immediately. Once you have finished cleaning the mess, take the puppy outside to go potty. It isnât likely that he will need to potty again, but it is worth the attempt in case he still has a little left.
Pay attention to when these accidents happen and determine if there is a commonality between them. Perhaps you need to add an extra trip outside during the day for your puppy, or you should make a change in his walking schedule. Maybe there is something that is startling your dog and causing an accident.
